*History: Yuuta is the youngest son of Yuuichiro Tomonaga and Amami Tomonaga. Both parents often being away on trips, Yuuta was mostly raised by his two older sisters, Azuki and Kurumi (Azuki being oldest). There was nothing particularly extraordinary about his childhood, though that changed when he met Deckerd, the Brave Police robot, in the summer of his third grade.

Yuuta first met Deckerd by accidentally finding the warehouse where he was secretly being developed. After introducing himself to the then unfinished ‘bot, Yuuta proceeded to treat Deckerd as if he were another human. He taught Deckerd his soon to be signature pose as well as his bravery. This eventually led to Deckerd developing his sentience. Yuuta’s involvement in this process convinced the commissioner of the Tokyo police department Juuzo Saejima to hire him as a child policeman as well as the boss of the entire Brave Police taskforce – a separate branch of the police department dedicated to high tech and biotechnological cases. It was soon revealed that Deckerd could combine with a support vehicle J-Roader to become the large robot J-Decker. However due to his sentience, the combination sequence had to be inputted manually – this was solved during a case where Deckerd was forced to use the combination to defeat their enemy by using the deep emotional connection between Yuuta and Decekerd.

Deckerd was originally the only member, but that soon changed with the arrival of the Build Team, a trio of construction vehicle themed robots. Originally they had no personality, only having the basic AI Deckerd had begun with before his meeting with Yuuta. However, after a case with the technology-controlling alien, Gaizonite, they determined that it would be better if the subsequent additions to the Brave Police also had sentience – and so McCrane, Power Joe, and Dumpson were added to their team. Later revealed that they too could combine into one large mecha, the Build team attempted Deckerd’s method of believing in Yuuta only to fail – they ended up utilizing their deeper emotional connections with their own human companions to combine into Build Tiger and saving the day.

Later on, Yuuta’s mother and father came home to visit – so caught up in their arrival, Yuuta ended up accidentally alienating Deckerd. Deckerd ran away, unable to deal with the feeling of abandonment and was only convinced to forgive Yuuta’s insensitivity after a traumatic event and beating up the bad guy of the day. Yuuta learned from this case to consider the emotions of others as well as how his actions affected those around him.

Not too long after, Yuuta met the ninja robot Shadowmaru and was involved in attempting to bring Shadowmaru’s prototype, Kagerou, to justice. While the case ended with Shadowmaru permanently joining the BP team, it also ended in tragedy, with Kagerou’s demise.

The final member of the Build team was introduced soon after: Drill Boy, a rather immature robot with a lacking consideration for others. Yuuta attempted to teach Drill Boy the meaning of compassion, but only after a run in with an advanced bug civilization did Drill Boy truly learn to be empathetic and achieve Build team’s final combination: Super Build Tiger.

The Brave Police continued to solve more cases after, some with fantastical elements such as Inti avatar of greed and desire, and some ludicrous ones with oversized Pandas.

It was during a case with out of control robots called Double Bots that they met the seventh member of their team: Gunmax. Originally, Gunmax did not sit well with the others – he was too reckless, too brash, too independent for the team orientated Brave Police members. A show of teamwork with J-Decker and then with Yuuta softened Gunmax’s tsundere nature, but it was only until after Gunmax and Deckerd went on a date had a bonding episode that Gunmax truly joined the team, bringing with him not only himself but also a new weapon, Max Cannon.

And then Deckerd died.

Two new robots with Super AI appeared called Chieftains. They tore a swath of destruction, programmed to be evil. Their goal was to destroy the ultimate robot J-Decker – and they succeeded, brining Deckerd down and slaying him in one go. Before all hope was lost, Duke (or Knight as he preferred others to call him) appeared with his creator, Regina Argine, and combined into Duke Fire to take down the Chieftains. In light of Deckerd’s demise, Duke was to become leader of the Brave Police group in Japan. Yuuta, of course, could not accept so easily replacing his friend and refused. In the meantime, Deckerd’s broken body was taken over by Gaizonite to form an evil J-Decker who in turn attacked a prison island. The team went to save the inmates, only to find themselves against the evil J-Decker. Yuuta was forced to order the others to fight against J-Decker as well as rearrange his priorities to save the prisoners rather than going after Deckerd. He had to find his courage again after losing Deckerd – especially since while he taught Deckerd courage, he often took his own from Deckerd.

In a case where the BP team was assigned to protect a cargo train, it was revealed that Deckerd was to be rebuilt, and using their love for their leader, the Build team overcame the attacking Chieftains and Gaizonite to form Super Build Tiger and defend Deckerd. However, they were not enough – it was only after Duke recognized that love was not an evil but a part of his sentience and strength and formed into Duke Fire that they could fight Chieftain off and recover Deckerd and his AI chip.

However it was soon found that Deckerd, while retaining his personality, did not have his memories. Yuuta attempted to recover them, taking Deckerd to nostalgic locations and pushing himself to even injury in his desperation. The rest of the BP team were sent off to fight a monster in Tokyo. Deckerd, who could not take the pressure, requested Regina to wipe his AI to a clean state. Yuuta helplessly gave up and went to join the team in their fight, only to be encouraged by them to not give up on Deckerd. Deckerd, as well, subconsciously did not want the memory wipe and instead overcame his amnesia and went to join the team, leading them to victory.

As it turned out to be, Duke in his Duke Fire mode would be able to combine with J-Decker to form Fire J-Decker – only problem was that there was 1/50000 chance that both of their personalities would make it out of the combination. Duke explained to the BP team and Yuuta that Regina’s standoffish behavior and dislike of emotions came from a traumatic childhood – and was caught by Regina herself. She’d been attempting to hide the fact that her father wasn’t a perfect cop from the others – and herself – and Duke ran out to chase after her. And then the Cheiftains attacked. This time, they were upgraded so that they had no good in their hearts. The team could not take them out by themselves – and even after Duke arrived, they could not overcome the duo. In fact, the Chieftains combined in a system similar to Fire J-Decker’s – killing one of the Chieftains in the process. Duke and Deckerd were forced to consider combining in to Fire J-Decker, and while Yuuta was concerned for their safety, eventually he was swayed by their arguments for the better good. He acquiesced, and after reassuring Regina, allowed their combination. Thankfully, Fire J-Decker was a success – both Duke and Deckerd retaining their memories and personalities. The Chieftains were destroyed, AI chips recovered, and Gaizonite was destroyed as well, brining the end of his menace. The developer of the Chieftains, Victim O’Rand, was also arrested. The Brave Police team, Yuuta, and Regina submitted a request that the AIs of arrested sentient robots be stored and incarcerated rather than becoming reprogrammed to honor their sentience. Commissioner Saejima agreed and set the precedent for further cases.

The case closed, and with Regina’s change of heart about emotions and the source of evil, the BP team returned to normalcy. A case with a collapsing underground mall strengthened Regina’s resolve and gave her a bit of peace with her own nature. She departed for England – with a drawing from Yuuta and a kiss.

There were more cases after – one involving a Gunpulator system – an attachment to the BP team’s Super AI which would allow them 100 percent accuracy. However, they felt that this would be a violation of their humanity and opted not to receive the upgrade. While Yuuta did not understand at first, he spoke to Deckerd and agreed to follow their wishes. In the end, the BP team overcame the Gunpulator systems themselves and determined that they would learn to improve their aim rather than forcing upgrades.

Another case involved ghosts – one of Yuuta’s greatest fears. While for most of the case he was reduced to tears, he ‘braved up’ at the end to defeat the man responsible for the holographic projections of ghosts across town and closed the case.

Their most recent case had to do with stolen vintage cars. With the help of the main engineer Toudou, they lured the thieves and defeated them with the help of Gunmax and his Max Cannon.

*Personality: Yuuta is at base a child. He is innocent and a little naïve about the workings of the world, though he tries his best to comprehend – especially with how often the members of the Brave Police have their existential crises.

Nonetheless, he does his best to understand the viewpoints of others, showing compassion and empathy for others at a level above his age group. He adapts well to situations, as do most children, quickly getting used to the strangeness that is the Brave Police, as well as his role of ‘Boss’. He is also responsible, capable of balancing out his childish playfulness and work attitudes, often switching from one to the other as cases pop up.

Yuuta is, of course as the boss of the Brave Police, courageous at heart, even if his usual crybaby exterior doesn’t show it. Despite his fears, if it is to protect others from harm he will step up to the task – even at the risk of his life. He loves his friends and the members of the Brave Police – he would do anything within – and even outside – of his power to keep them safe and/or happy.

Yuuta holds deep connections with the robots in the Brave Police team – especially Deckerd. To Yuuta, the members of the Brave Police are not only his subordinates, but are his closest friends and perhaps even family. Deckerd himself often acts as Yuuta’s brother or father figure, always lending strength as a pillar of support – whether that is becoming Yuuta’s source of courage or allowing him to sleep in his cabin because of a terrible nightmare.

Other than Deckerd, Yuuta has tying relationships with the rest of the team as well.  Every Super AI being based off of Deckerd’s original AI, every Super AI robot has an amount of attachment to Yuuta carried over, but each member of the Brave Police is also unique in their personalities. Yuuta connects to each of them as best as he can, placing a lot of trust and faith in their abilities. To him it doesn’t matter that they’re twenty something feet tall robots. They are his precious friends.

Writing Samples
*First Person Sample:

Hello?

[There’s a bit of static and a loud burst of what sounds like wind into the microphone. There’s some more crackling before Yuuta’s voice comes through again.]

Hello, this is Tomonaga Yuuta, boss of the Brave Police. I’m – I’m looking for members of the Brave Police. If you guys are out there, please respond.

[His voice becomes a bit wobbly towards the end – he’s lost and confused and he’s hungry. It’s a fight not to burst out into frustrated tears by this point.]

For anyone else: I’m looking for any of the eight members of the Brave Police – their names are: Deckerd, McCrane, Power Joe, Dumpson, Drill Boy, Shadowmaru, Gunmax, and Duke. They’re all really tall – about three times my dad’s hei – I-I mean around….

[He pauses a moment to think.]

Around five meters tall. They’re all big giant robots. Please contact me if you see any of them around.

… Deckerd, I miss you. Please be okay guys.

[The sound cuts off.]

*Third Person Sample:

It’s a bit of a struggle not to burst out laughing.

Hiding his smile under both hands, Yuuta holds his breath, turning bright red from the lack of air. It doesn’t seem to do much for his expression though if the other’s face is anything to go by.

“I-I’m sorry, “ Yuuta eventually squeaks out, hiccupping. He looks as though he’s been crying rather than suppressing laughter, tears of mirth gathered at the corners of his eyes, but well.

He can’t help it. He falls apart into guffaws, immediately feeling bad even as he does so. It’s not entirely a heart wrenching guilt anyways – he’ll be soothing bruised egos for a few hours – okay, days – but at some point he would have passed out from holding his breath too long. There’s a stitch in his side and he’s doubled over, so hard is his laughter, but how could he resist?

He gathers himself long enough to string a quick sentence together: “N-nice frocks, guys.” And then he dissolves into giggles again. Now they know how he felt with the schoolgirl outfit at least.
